* No one really knows WHY Valentines day is celebrated on February 14. Although Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Termi are associated with 14 February, in 1969 Roman Catholics removed the feastday of Saint Valentine on 14 February from the General Roman Calendar, stating "Though the memorial of Saint Valentine is ancient, it is left to particular calendars, since, apart from his name, nothing is known of Saint Valentine except that he was buried on the Via Flaminia on 14 February."
* No one really knows WHERE the first Valentines day was celebrated. Geoffrey Chaucer, the English poet, best known for "The Canterbury Tales" made the first recorded association of Valentine's Day with romantic love in 1382 in the poem Parlement of Foules:

* No one really knows HOW Valentines day became related to the celebration of love. What is known is that feasts of fertility have long been celebrated in the early spring. In the United States, the first mass-produced valentines were produced in 1847 by Esther Howland. Her father had a book and stationery store. Ester received an English valentine and was inspired to market the idea.
